Minnie Dee has released the single and video for her latest cut – When the Funk Was All We Had.
Primary production and mixing took place at NWS — building the track into a hybrid of old school disco/funk and EDM. Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Chic were major inspirations. Had a great time moving the first incarnation of the song created by Minnie and Daniel into the “future disco” sound and style represented on the final version.
Added a funky bass line, layers of kicks and snares, additional synth pads, Nile Rodgers’ style rhythm guitar, hand percussion, acoustic piano and loads of delays and verbs in a merging of new and old sounds. Finishing touch was some great background harmonies provided by Minnie and Sekou Luke – who also produced and directed the video.
